CAREERS, COACHING, SKILLS

Career development refers to the process of self-knowledge, exploration, decision-making towards choosing a career, improving ones’ skills, and advancing along a career path. It's a lifelong process of learning and decision-making that brings a person closer to their ideal job, skillset, and lifestyle. It is a part of human development, and the process can span a lifetime. Career coaching focuses on work and career and is similar to career counseling. Career coaching is not to be confused with life coaching, which concentrates on personal development.

Coaching is a form of development in which an experienced person, called a coach, supports a learner or client in achieving a specific personal or professional goal by providing training and guidance. Occasionally, coaching may mean an informal relationship between two people, of whom one has more experience and expertise than the other and offers advice and guidance as the latter learns. Coaching differs from mentoring by focusing on specific tasks or objectives, as opposed to more general goals or overall development. Coaching has applications in fields such as sports, performing arts (singers get vocal coaches), acting (drama coaches and dialect coaches), business, education, health care, and can even extend to extremely intimate areas like relationships (for example, dating coaches). Coaches use a range of communication skills (such as targeted restatements, listening, questioning, clarifying, etc.) to help clients shift their perspectives and thereby discover different approaches to achieve their goals. These skills can be used in almost all types of coaching. In this sense, coaching is a form of "meta-profession" that can apply to supporting clients in any human endeavor, ranging from their concerns in health, personal, professional, sport, social, family, political, spiritual dimensions, etc. Coaching approaches are also influenced by cultural differences. Business coaching, also called executive coaching or leadership coaching, is for corporate executives, members of management, teams, and leadership. It provides positive support, feedback, and advice on an individual or group basis to improve personal effectiveness in the business setting, many a time focusing on behavioral changes through psychometrics or 360-degree feedback. Coaches help their clients advance towards specific professional goals. These include career transition, interpersonal and professional communication, performance management, organizational effectiveness, managing career, and personal changes, developing executive presence, enhancing strategic thinking, dealing effectively with conflict, and building an effective team within an organization. An industrial-organizational psychologist may work as an executive coach.

Skills development is the process of (1) identifying skill gaps, and (2) developing and honing these skills. It is important because skills determine one’s ability to execute their plans with success. In India, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship is responsible for co-ordination of all Skill Development efforts across the country, removal of disconnect between demand and supply of skilled manpower, building the vocational and technical training framework, skill up-gradation, building of new skills and innovative thinking not only for existing jobs but also jobs that are to be created. Its vision is for a 'Skilled India'. Human resources refers to the set of people who make up the workforce of an organization, business sector, industry, or economy and also includes the human capital, the knowledge and skills which they collectively command.

The human-resources department (HR department) of an organization performs human resource management, overseeing various aspects of employment, such as compliance with labor law and employment standards, interviewing, administration of employee benefits, organizing of employee files with the required documents for future reference, and some aspects of recruitment (also known as talent acquisition) and employee off-boarding. HR serves as the key link between an organization's management and its employees.
